DIABETES CARE

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that affects how your body uses glucose (blood sugar), an important source of energy for your cells. When diabetes is not well managed, high blood sugar levels can increase the risk of complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, and blood vessels. Early diagnosis, regular monitoring, and ongoing medical care can help you live a healthy and active life.

There are three main types of diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with Type 1 diabetes require insulin therapy for life.

Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Healthy lifestyle changes, medications, and regular follow-up can help manage Type 2 diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes develops during pregnancy and usually resolves after delivery. Managing blood sugar during pregnancy is important for the health of both mother and baby, and women who have gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.

FAQ

1. What is the best way to manage diabetes?
Managing diabetes involves eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, monitoring blood sugar levels, taking medications as prescribed, attending regular medical appointments, and working closely with your healthcare team. We provide personalized care for patients living with diabetes, which includes education on how you can take control of your condition.
2. How can I prevent diabetes complications?
Keeping your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol under control, attending regular eye and foot examinations, taking medications as directed, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
3. Can I still enjoy my favourite foods?
Yes. Most people with diabetes can continue to enjoy many of their favourite foods in moderation as part of a balanced meal plan. A Certified Diabetes Educator can help develop an eating plan that works for your lifestyle.
4. How often should I have diabetes follow-up appointments?
The frequency depends on your individual health needs and how well your diabetes is controlled. Your healthcare provider will recommend an appropriate follow-up schedule.
5. What should I do if my blood sugar is too high or too low?
Follow your diabetes care plan. If your blood sugar remains dangerously high or low, or if you experience severe symptoms such as confusion, loss of consciousness, or seizures, seek emergency medical care immediately.
6. Can the pharmacy help manage my diabetes?
Yes. The Pharmasave pharmacy next to our clinic has Certified Diabetes Educators who can provide diabetes education, medication counselling, blood glucose monitoring advice, diet plans, and ongoing support.
7. What should I bring to my diabetes appointment?
Bring your Ontario Health Card, blood sugar records, medication list, recent laboratory results (if available), and any questions you have about managing your diabetes.
8. Can diabetes be prevented?
While Type 1 diabetes cannot currently be prevented, many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented through healthy eating, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and routine medical care.
